Temporary Instruction Permit "TIP Card"

#1: All Driver’s Education students MUST obtain a Temporary Instruction Permit (TIP) BEFORE attending class.

Bring the following items to your appointment at the Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV) to obtain your Temporary Instruction Permit:

➤ For Minors (Ages 14–17):

• Original or State Certified Birth Certificate (no photocopies)
• Social Security Card
• Court-Certified Custody Papers (if applicable)
• Parent or Legal Guardian (must be present with valid Driver’s License or State ID)

• Original or State Certified Birth Certificate
• Social Security Card
• Proof of Residence
  • Two proofs if applying for a Real ID
  • If you already have a valid Louisiana State ID with SSN on file, only the ID and proof of residency are needed

• $32.25 (+ service fee up to $6.00)
• Accepted Payment: Cash, Credit/Debit Card, Money Order, or Check (Check # must be over 1500)
• Convenience fees apply for cards and checks

• Your temporary Instruction Permit (TIP) card
• Any requested/required documents

Once you finish your classroom instruction and behind-the-wheel training, you will receive a sealed envelope with all required documentation for licensing.

When you return to the OMV, make sure to bring the following: 

• Temporary Instruction Permit
• Original Birth Certificate
• Social Security Number
• Parent/Guardian with ID
• Custody Papers (if applicable)
